A wedding day is one of the most special and memorable days of a couple's life, but sometimes Mother Nature doesn't cooperate and rain becomes a part of the big day. While rain on a wedding day may not be what you envisioned, it can add a certain charm and uniqueness to the celebration. With a little bit of planning and preparation, you can ensure that your rainy wedding day is just as magical and memorable as you hoped it would be. In this article, I will be sharing some tips to help you make the most of a rainy wedding day, so that you can relax and enjoy your special day, come rain or shine.
I know a lot of couples plan weddings around the hottest time of the year due to the fear around the rain, but I always tell my couples its actually thought to be good luck. The knot in "tying the knot" becomes wet and therefore is harder to break. Cultures believe it to be cleansing, washing away tough times or sadness in your past creating a fresh start for their wedding journey. I've also heard its supposed to bring fertility!

TOP TIPS FOR RAIN ON YOUR WEDDING DAY
Getting married outside? have a backup plan.
Tip
Venues with outdoor settings almost always have a covered area for if the weather is significantly adverse, or they wouldn't be able to host winter weddings. Decide a time at which point you are going to make the call to move to Plan B. As it can take some time to move the chairs, floral arrangements and other decor. Same goes for any other activities that might be impacted by outside activities, such as reception drinks and canapes. Make sure you have a detailed plan written out and communicate this plan well before hand, so your wedding co-ordinator, vendors and guests know what to if it rains. You don't want to be bombarded with questions on the day.
01
wedding day umbrellas and shelter
tip
If your venue doesn't have the space, or you are choosing a registry office that requires travel in between think about the temporary shelter you can put in place. If its a garden area can you hire a marquee, it doesn't have to have sides or all the trimmings. Something I highly recommend is getting matching umbrellas, or those that match the theme of your wedding. Lets face it, gold umbrellas are ugly! It makes for great images from a confetti throw to dashing to the church. They are incredibly easy to sell on as a bundle via Facebook marketplace or Ebay. I have had several couples do this.
02
Best place to buy umbrella's in bulk
OR
dress for the weather
Tip
You probably won't believe me, but I have had brides with no shawl or coat for a winter wedding and then look utterly cold and miserable in their portraits, which is not what anyone wants. Even if its just a snuggly coat to wear between getting between locations, it will be a godsend.
I highly recommend some spare little flats to wear when getting between locations if it rains. Shoes, especially white ones, sink in the grass, get splashed with muddy puddles and leaves you with cold wet feet!
Makeup, if it looks like the heavens are going to open then waterproof mascara is going to be a must. Most makeup artists use a fixing spray when finished, but if yours doesn't its worth buying your own to keep in your bag along with some transluscent powder.
03
MAKE THE MOST OF THE RAIN
tip
So it might not be what your planned, you might be even dreading it. However, rest assured I have never seen it rain ALL day, there will be gaps where it will stop. Rain can create beautiful and intimate images, especially at night when we can light it up with flash photography. The skies can have have dramatic sunsets and weather breaks that create an incredible atmosphere. Sometimes you might be lucky enough to get a rainbow as well.

Tip
stay positive
05
The most important thing you can do on your rainy wedding day is to stay positive. Remember that the weather is beyond your control, and it's essential to enjoy your special day with your loved ones.
